Drones in the DMV: Where can I take drone photos?

Picture this: You score a gorgeous new listing in Arlington. It sits on a private 2-acre lot backing up to a forest buffer. The sellers are very excited because during your listing presentation you told them that your marketing plan includes beautiful drone photos and aerial footage.

OOPS.

Here are some very important things to know about flying drones in the D.C. Metropolitan region:

~It is not permitted to fly any commercial or hobby drone within a 7-mile radius of Washington, DC. Any drones flying within that area must have a permit for a specific government purpose. (Photos ❌)

~There is a Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) within a 30-mile radius of Reagan National Airport.

~Flying a drone within the 15-mile “inner ring” is prohibited without specific FAA authorization (Photos ❌)

~Flying a drone between 15 and 30 miles IS permitted, provided it doesn’t fly above 400ft, leave visual line of sight or interfere with other aircraft. (Photos ✅)

~You can check the “B4UFLY” app to check where drone flights are permitted, and whether your listing is within or outside the “no fly zone”.

Have you used drone photography for your listings?
